For those of you who bought the Korean version, there is no translation in the bonus disc. Gaulsan, together with the help of Sulhee and other Korean fans, have very kindly started to translate them into English for the overseas fans.

It is very hard work and I'm extremely grateful especially to her and the others who are helping. Please do not use them for commercial use and enjoy them when you watch the disc.

I started the translation of supplementary DVD of AS.
Before posting it, I would like to explain several things.

* I'm not sure whether this violates the copy right of the DVD.
So, I decided to share only the English version of supplementary DVD, not Korean version.
Also, I would ask not to publish this for commercial use.

* I couldn't ask openly for help to other sisters on the KOB, and till now Sulhee volunteered to help me capturing Korean into text. (She is working on it now. ^^ )

* The supplementary DVD has 16 chapters divided in 5 categories.
I will make translated documents in Microsoft Word file and attach to the postings on this freeboard.
Each chapter will make one file with identical number and title of the content.

* About the files attached to this posting,
- The file named 'Table' lists 16 chapters and categories.
For your convenience, I wrote both Korean and English together.

What Director wanted to talk through this story was… I think it was emotions that people don’t usually express. Instinctive emotions people want to hide, such as betrayal, anger….

* Hur:
I think we didn’t talk the precise facts about this movie at our first meeting.
I met the Movie Director, Light Director, and Art Director before the scenario was finished, and we kept discussing about this movie as the scenario was being made.

* Lee Mo Gae, Movie Director:
We first met at a fish restaurant. When I first read the ‘treatment’ – it was not even a scenario yet – I thought it would be interesting. I expected it would become a hot and sticky kind of movie.

* Cho Sung Woo, Music DirectorI’ve always waited for the next work of Director Hur. I’ve waited for his next work since “Springtime” and… at last he told me he was ready, the story was like this, and he was quite confident of his story. It was the beginning of this movie.

* Oh Seung Chul, Light Director
Through previous movies, I felt it should have strong images. I told my opinion to Director Hur, and he agreed that this movie would need some ‘color’ in it, as it has strong emotions. We had a similar feeling on this.

* Cho Sung Woo, Music Director
I think this movie is different from his previous movies.The condition includes very emotional, complicated, strong feelings and he wanted to express these feelings through this movie. As his previous movies had a strong subject, rather than emotions, I didn’t expect such to hear such strong emotional story.

What I’ve thought about the concept of the two characters was the fact that Insoo was a light director, and Yejin was a housewife.
Light director, we know as we often work together, even though they want to wear fancy cloths, they often have to wear black clothes or clothes that don’t stand out.
I had to agonize to find good-looking clothes that don’t stand out.
Moreover, the actor is a very charming person, has his own discerning eyes, and knows what fits him well. So it was not an easy job.

The most important point was to coordinate what we propose and what YJ think.
On top of that, we tried to match the Director’s idea and concept about the color and costumes.

In case of SYJ, as she is too pretty, we had to cover up her beauty to look more like a housewife. Brilliant or vivid colored cloths looked too good on her, she looked too pretty and bright.
As the character of her role was dark and agonizing, making YJ not to look pretty was the most difficult part. Making a pretty actress not pretty.

We prepared a lots of kinds of clothes. At the fitting, the most important was the opinion of the director, next the actors, and then the part that we coordinate.
Director spent much time on the fitting, chose a particular cloth, and we brought it to the shooting sight. Then, the director demanded some other cloths at the shooting sight.

When we fitted at the studio, we focused on whether a particular cloth matches the actor or actress. At Samcheok, as the director was a person who emphasizes the atmosphere of the shooting site, it was very hard to fulfill his request.
We had to try to find costumes that make the movie flow smoothly, without much choice in colors.

Actors and actress has strong images. They naturally want to be good looking. There was some gap between what the director wanted and what the actor/actress wanted. They had to compromise … until the time of shooting.

About SYJ, Seoyong.
It was winter when the accident has occurred.
Time passed and it became spring. And after a year, she meets Insoo again.Seoyong came to Samcheok wearing plain clothes due to a sudden accident. We mainly used colors that didn’t stand out.

The Concept after she met Insoo was… a woman fallen in love for the first time. Though she was a married woman, she was young, pretty, and lovely, and we tried to express those feeling through colors.As spring came, the color of her clothes became brighter. We used soft pastel tone.

* Son Sam Joo, Hair and Cosmetic Artist
BYJ, Insoo was a light director. They usually work outdoors and their skin is usually tanned. I advised to make his skin look naturally tanned.

SYJ was an ordinary housewife, and we advised some more housewife-like hairstyle. But our advice was not taken, and we see the natural hairstyle of the movie.

If the actor or actress has his or her own stylists, we have to arrange the difference between our opinions.
In case of BYJ, I had no problem with his makeup and hair artists.
In case of SYJ, as I mentioned before, we had to make arrangement on her hairstyle.
BYJ’s hairstyle didn’t change from the beginning to the end.
Men don’t change their hairstyles according to their emotional change.

SYJ tied up her hair at first, and later she untied it.
Women tend do dress up when they fall in love, don’t they?
We expressed it by untying her hair and adding a little bit of color on her lip.

The situation was important. The fact that they are in the same circumstance.
Due to this circumstance, they could get closer, but eventually they couldn’t get close enough because of the circumstance. Cause if you see each other, he or she reminds you of the accident.

A kind of attraction. I think there was a kind of attraction to that character.
I used to study my character – his habit, his favorite color, family, education… etc. – I used to prepare a lot about the character. On the contrary, I got closer to this character step by step as I took shootings.

* Lee Mo Gae:
Director Hur doesn’t make any precise decision.
Until the day before shooting, he considers several possibilities, he never decides a specific plan. We knew his style before we started this work.

After a while, I talked more, and from some time I began to talk more private topics, more interesting and comforting topics… like the movie.
By the way, SYJ is a great actress. She can concentrate and express emotions very well. I learned a lot from her.
I wonder what she could have done if she didn’t become an actress!

So, I try not to settle specific direction ahead, and I am actually doing so.
This movie has ironies, and the two characters caught in a maze were very complicated and difficult to perform.
I focused on how BYJ and SYJ would become Insoo and Seoyong, rather than giving them precise direction.

SYJ: We just have to do it naturally, don’t we?
BYJ and SYJ, discuss about how to act.
BYJ: I want this part to be shown well. That’s why I tried to go this way.
Hur: I think the beginning part was just fine last time.

Even though we try not to be in such dilemma, we face it from time to time….
I think Insoo was in that circumstance.
He thought, “how could she betray me? How could she betray my trust, my love?”.
Later he finds himself in the same ironic position that his wife was, and comes to understand her little by little….
In such way, this movie makes you think of your life and love once more.

We’ve worked here, in this street for such a long time… I can’t believe it’s over.
It seemed endless, so it’s strange that it really ended.
We have works remained to do in Seoul. I wish we could make a good movie.

I am thankful that I could meet nice people in this work, and hope to meet you again.

<The Road>
* Cho Sung Woo, Music Director
By the works I did with Director HJH, I acquired a habit of thinking of the subject lying beneath the scenario.
When I first read the scenario, I found that this had somewhat conventional storyline. I studied to find out what subject of this scenario has connection with his previous works.
In spite of the conventional storyline, there was a very strong message, and when I found the message, I knew that this would be another good work.

The extramarital love affair is just a subject matter, the actual feeling of the movie does not show that way.
There is a contrast between the emotion of love they are facing now, and the memory of love of the past.
Also, it has connection with the job of a Light Director, which is dazzling but also lonely.
On the other hand, when it snows, the scenery changes abruptly. Snow has the image of ‘strong presence’ and also ‘momentary’.

His job, the image of snow, the memory of past love… a man who had difficulty getting out of these things tries to be faithful to a new emotion called love.
I thought these would be very hard to express.
I wished to make this movie focus on the love that is present right now, rather than affairs or ethics. HJH also had this in mind.
On top of this, HJH also enjoyed the conflicted emotions coming from the extramarital affair. I was rather attracted by the present love.

Compared to other directors, HJH has a different style in designing music.
He doesn’t connect a specific music with a specific scene.
He thinks sharing the common feeling is the most important.
We spent almost 99% of our time discussing on what to express through our movie, rather than a specific music. Through these discussions, HJH and I came to share the identical standpoint, and he expressed it through image, while I expressed it through music.
Other directors order a certain style of music at each scene, but HJH is not a director of that kind.

What I mainly wanted to express was…. To express the happiness you are feeling right now, not worrying about the future.
Through my music, I wanted to give the contented feeling of happiness to the people who watch the movie.
From the beginning to the end, I focused on the image of ‘present’ and ‘joy’.
‘Joy’ doesn’t match extramarital affairs, but it matches ‘present’. I tried to express that.

To express strong emotions, we need contrast.
When the two were with their own spouses, the music was dry and repetitive, and when they were together, I tried to fill the music with joy.

At the ending scene, when it starts to snow, I tried to express the arousing of emotion through the music.

# 18: 29
* Outdoor theater(Yonsei Univ)

The movie production company wanted to take shots, without using extras, in a real concert. This is not an easy job.
The audience pay money to buy the ticket, and the singers and artists are paid for their work. Making NG and stopping in the middle of a concert, shooting while the audience is watching, these are not easy at all.

My company was preparing an omnibus concert anyway, and I decided to do both event together.
When making contracts with the artists, I explained that this was an event for both shooting and concert. I asked them to agree with the fact that the concert might be stopped, and they may be shown in the movie.

The movie needed two scenes. a quiet music at sunset, and a music with very brilliant light work.
If a TV star shows up in the movie, the audience’s attention will be distracted.
So I chose artists who are well known, but not often seen on TV, who were Loveholic and Clazziquai.
I made two strategies. Loveholic must sing at 7:10 PM when the sun sets, and Clazziquai had to sing with very brilliant light work.

* Motel
I thought that the clear tone of piano would match this movie, and actively used piano music.
This movie has the contemporary aspect, the affair, and I thought that people would expect such aspect. I thought that I should satisfy the expectation of the people, and decided to use emotional music in the later part of the movie.
I used strings. There were 24 players in the string part, violin, viola, and cello. 24 string players can make quit a deep sound.

HJH has a very sharp ear and it gets sharper when it gets near the ending part of the movie. He can point out subtle change of tone.
Once I changed the music to an identical one but the one that I thought was musically better without telling him.
HJH said, ‘something’s changed’.
I said “How did you know that? Nobody would notice.”
But he insisted that it was different.

With a very small difference, I preferred a musically better one, while HJH preferred the one that better matched the movie.
There was no argument on the music as a whole, but among this subtle difference, we had difficulty to make agreement. We agonized to the end to decide which version to use.

<Everyday Life of Yong Joon>

* BYJ
He asked me several times how I thought, and I answered I thought it was difficult.
As I answered it’s hard whenever I was asked, he seemed to feel sorry.
Later I came to think that he might be a little bit upset with my answers.
But it was really that difficult for me. – laugh –
I wondered what shall I do from now on…. Am I an actor?… What is an actor?… and so on…

* Parking lot of the hospital.
Hur: We need a shot from behind.
BYJ: Then I shall get off the car with the key..
All: Thank you very much..
BYJ: (in a joking tone) Why? Why don’t we do once more? – laugh –

* In front of the operating room

* BYJ: I think I couldn’t enjoy while acting in the past.
I just tried to show what I’ve prepared for the work, and I didn’t feel and enjoy the atmosphere of the field.

* HUR: I think one of the major reason he chose this work is to challenge a different style of work.
The working styles of BYJ and I are different, and it doesn’t mean good or bad.
It was very hard for BYJ to follow my style of work.
According to his words, he felt he was being stripped naked.

* BYJ: I thought there was a ‘right’ answer. Of course there is no 100% right answer, but I thought I could find something near to that.
In case of director Hur, there was nothing even similar to that. There was no outline. If it goes this way, this is right, and if it goes that way, that is right.
Frankly speaking, I am not recovered from this confusion.
I think this kind of confusion was a great experience for me.
It has been a chance for me to mature and evolve as an actor.

YJ: I’ve called several times, but couldn’t talk with him.
I keep standing because I want more information, I run here, and….

# 0458 At a Restaurant

Staffs are smoking to fill the ashtray with cigarette.
S1 : It doesn’t have to be full in the beginning.

BYJ: What’s wrong with you?
S2 : I have a sore throat. …
BYJ: You get cold even you don’t work hard? - laugh -

Insoo: I look funny, don’t I?

Hur: Drink, hold, feel-anger, ‘Please Go’ …

* BYJ:
I had many extraordinary experiences this time, including the style of acting and everything.
I never performed in a drunken state before. I don’t like it because I get flushed with alcohol, and I was worried if I couldn’t focus on my work.
In this movie, there is a scene of bursting into tears in anger in front of his junior. He is hurt by his wife’s betrayal.
I thought I couldn’t feel such emotion well enough without alcohol, and I felt like it would be OK in this particular movie.

Before shooting, I was not sure if I could express such pain and collapse in front of my junior, but the needed emotion was expressed, and I collapsed.
I think… it was easier than expected.

BYJ: I felt like bursting into tears as I saw the scene.
It would be funny if I cry while watching my own work.
I felt the same pain again, and tear came out, but I couldn’t cry.
There were too many eyes on me. – laugh –
People would think it’s strange for me to cry over my own work.

<Everyday Life of Ye Jin>

* SYJ: It’s only a few days left. I feel happy, I wonder what would come, and I’m a little bit anxious. I like this feeling of starting a new work. I feel very good now.

* In front of the Operation Room.

In many cases, the film that we took on the first day was not actually used in the movie.
On the first day, it is the first experience for the actors, the staff, everybody to work together. It is not easy to do well on the first day.
This time, I used the film that was taken on the first day.

In case of SYJ, we thought that her husband is in operation, and might be crying.
As I had taken lots of repeated shots, BYJ got exhausted, and SYJ had difficulty keep crying.
I told her that it would be OK even if she doesn’t shed tears, being exhausted of crying is also realistic.
Later, SYJ said that it was very hard, and she thought that this movie would be a very difficult one.

* SYJ:
The audience already knows that she is crying, don’t they?
In this part, Insoo’s eyes are identical to the eyes of the audience.
It would be OK to do this way… I suppose.
I think Insoo could ask Seoyong.

I think the director finished the first cut earlier than I’ve expected.

Hur: Grab his cloth, raise your hand, and hesitate several times, and then hit him.
BYJ: haha…. It’s too scary. I would like it if he hits me right away.
I think hitting right away would be more realistic.

BYJ: Hit me once, and then try to kick me, it is the time you should stop him.
Then your kick misses me and you fall down.

#6. 도안 Design

< Designing Samcheok >
* Park Sang Hoon, Art Director
I intended to make the scene realistic as possible, yet not too showy as the movie should focus on the actors.
I visited many small hospitals in rural area including Samcheok Medical Center.
I had an impression that most hospitals had similar interior.
White wall, pink curtains, blue blanket… it was the routine wherever I go.
I gave a little change to the wall, changed the blanket to ivory color, and curtain into white.
I made a ward of soft colors, a ward that would exist in a small city. At first, I considered using some more color in the ward, but as the actors wore dark colorless costume, I had to match the space with them.

* Hur Jin Ho, Director
I don’t want to make the background look artificial, and I don’t want it too raw.
I wanted the background to be conditioned but apparently look unconditioned.
I think it should have been very difficult, and I am satisfied with their work.

* Park Sang Hoon, Art Director
I’ve examined all the materials that I could get in Korea.
Some material can be used in windy condition, some could be used on trees.
In the scene that Insoo threw snowballs in the motel backyard, we used real snow.
As the snow in the backyard was already melt away, we brought snow from shaded places and restored it in the backyard by hand… to look like snow that nobody ever stepped on it.
On the trees and ground, we used polymer substance or salt.
Anyway I still have lots of memory on what we’ve done to make impeccable snow.

At first, the art department designed a background with strong color and images, but it was quite different from the idea of Director Hur. In cases like this, we should respect the idea of the director.

* HJH:
In the standpoint of Art director, there must be some unity in the concept and color throughout a movie, while I don’t decide anything ahead and changed things on shooting.
I made sudden requirements at the shooting sight. I think the Art director suffered a lot because of my style. Maybe he is one of the staffs who suffered most.

Seoyong: It is very pretty when it rains, but it becomes dirty after a while.
Insoo: But It is good while snowing.
Seoyong: Yes, you’re right.

#7. 기억 Memory

* Cho Duk Haeng, Staff of Sam Cheok Medical Center.
At first, the staffs came to Samcheok. I think that Samcheok was a nice place for shooting, and also a nice place for sightseeing.
This hospital was chosen because this is the only general hospital in this area.
When Director HJH came, he met the head of our hospital. We introduced the present status of this hospital, made arrangements about the shooting.
Director HJH came again for two or three times, and made more detailed arrangements.
They worked here for about three months. The overall location in Samcheok took four to five months.
About 15 to 20 staffs stayed here all the time.
The police, fire station, and municipal officers of Samcheok helped a lot.
The shooting sight was crowded and the staffs had to control the crowd.
There were lots of Japanese tourists.
They stayed until 4 or 5 o’clock in the morning waiting for BYJ.
The medical center helped the tourists by putting pictures around the shooting sight, we hired a Japanese-speaking tour guide to work at the information desk.

This is the shooting spot of BYJ and SYJ.
This wall was removed when shooting was done, and it is restored now.

The scene in the movie was like this. SYJ walked upwards, and patients walked there in the distance.
(I think there is some mistake in his memory. SYJ actually walked downwards.)

The ICU and the operation room was here.
This area was returned to its previous state, an oriental medicine clinic.

This is the ICU now, and it was the operation room in the movie.
BYJ ran down this corridor from there, and sit on a chair here.

* Park Jung Hee, Owner of a restaurant ‘Donbangsuk’
We prepared dishes the star liked. We often prepared seafood for him.
BYJ is a very gentle man. He often thanked us for the delicious food.
We don’t have any specific menu. We prepare ‘Bool-go-gi’. ‘Anchang-sal’ (kinds of beef dishes). Japanese tourists like ‘Sam-gyub-sal’ (pork) so we have it as our menu.

* Choi Mo Kyun, Owner of restaurant ‘Sae-eun-hye’
BYJ and the staffs came here for about ten times.
Since then, many foreign tourist - mostly fans of Yon-sama - came.
We prepare seafood, seasoned vegetable, miso-soup, and steamed rice with assorted grains for them.
On the other hand, local people have difficulty coming to our restaurant because of the tourists.

Insoo: Would you like to go out for dinner?
Seoyong: No, thank you.
Insoo: I’ll wait outside.

The hunting staffs might have searched many places (for a proper shooting site). Maybe this place met the image that was in the director’s mind.
Last November (2004), he came and discussed about his plan.
We often met. When he wanted some drink, he came with the staffs and I drank with them until late at night.
I’ve seen the two previous works of director HJH. I like his movies to the extent of a maniac.
As I liked his previous works, I thought AS would also be a good one.
When I met and talked with him, I could feel the identical feeling I’ve imagined through his works.
The crank in was on Febuary 4th, and the first shooting in this place was on 4th of April.
It was a scene that SYJ and BYJ exchange the cell-phones of their spouses to check the messages.
On May 21st, SYJ waited here, and BYJ came upstairs and asked her ‘Did you have good night?’. It took seven days.
The last shooting was on June 7th. SYJ comes alone and sobs by the window watching the window of Insoo’s room.
She goes downstairs and leaves.
That was the last scene taken in Samcheok.

I hoped Insoo and Seoyong to be happy together.
As a matter of fact, their past experience make it difficult for them to become happy, but I still hope them to become happy.

In AS, Seoyong is a married woman, and feels new love with an other man.
It must have been a special experience for you. Was there any difficulty acting as a married woman?

* SYJ
Of course it was difficult.
I don’t know well about how a married woman would feel.
I asked many married women around me. I tried to get some understanding through books and movies.
During the work, director Hur, BYJ, and other staffs helped me a lot.
Those things were reflected in the movie.

* BYJ
As you may see, there isn’t much words in the movie.
There are deep meanings in those words, though.
I can recall “We came too far”. “where shall we go from now?”, “Where are we going?”..
There were deep meanings and feelings in these words.

The scene that I like most is …
I didn’t see the movie on screen yet, but I watched it when editing, and I know how it was finished.
In the movie, Soojin’s father comes without notice and Seoyong hides in the restroom.
I go out with him and come back for Seoyong.
Seoyong says ‘I’m OK’. I felt very sorry for her.
I think it is the saddest scene throughout this movie, so it is most impressive to me.
There are lots of memory I have in this movie.
I attempted a new style of acting and lived as the character.
There isn’t a single scene that is not precious to me.
I think each of you would have your own favorite scene.

* HJH
I started this movie to show the double meaning of affair.
There is a saying that “If it becomes you, it’s a romance. If it comes to others, it’s an affair.”
In expressing their emotion, unlike my previous works or contemporary style, I didn’t want to show all the process.
I didn’t want Insoo and Seoyong to be seen fallen in love inevitably. I didn’t want to give them excuses.

Rather than showing the progress of love and ask for sympathy, I wanted the audience to watch them in a distant viewpoint, a viewpoint that they are in the same affair as their spouses. That’s why I removed the scene of first holding hands and first kiss.

* BYJ 배용준 :
Frankly speaking, I couldn’t agree with the storyline of meeting other person.
Maybe I couldn’t agree that I could fall in such ironic situation
If it were myself, umm… I think I couldn’t even start.
I don’t think I would feel love to another person because the tragic circumstance would be so overwhelming.
On the other hand, this movie needs to show such feelings with Seoyong.
If there was a certain guideline in this movie, I could do more active role in love.
On the contrary, I had to live 100% as Insoo in this movie and I had to express MY feeling.
Maybe I was attracted by Seoyong. I felt irresistible affection, but I didn’t want to admit it. I wanted to deny the love and I wanted to step backward.
I think that’s why Insoo, unlike Seoyong, couldn’t be more active.

You could find it at the bed scene.
Even then, Insoo thinks too much.
Seoyong worries about their future, while Insoo thinks what if they’ve met much earlier or much later.
So I think the feeling of Insoo towards Seoyong was not love, but an irresistible attraction. Later he thinks, it could have been love.
Insoo haven’t experienced ardent love, not even with Soojin.

Through this difficult course, he became to understand more about love, life, and everything.
