Yonsama, There’s a Reason Why He’s Loved!
Worth His Value

BYJ continues to leave numerous traditions in Korea and in Japan.
We’ve dug up the numbers to illustrate
how he managed to become the greatest hallyu star,
As Entrepreneur
123 billion yen - Return on investment for Ottowintech Stock Listing on KOSDAQ
In February 2006,
BYJ invested approximately 10.8 billion won in the Korean firm, Ottowintech.
Afterwards, the same company was listed on the KOSDAQ
resulting in a 123 billion yen profit for him.
We take off our hats to his judgment!
Viewer Ratings
65.8% - FL Highest Viewer Ratings
In 1996, BYJ and Choi Ji Woo first appeared together in the drama, FL,
which recorded the highest viewer ratings
in the history of Korea dramas at that time.
Way before we discovered Yonsama,
he had already established a great tradition.
An Actor’s Spirit
60 times – Greatest number of re-takes for the movie, AS.
Numerous re-takes keep piling up
as director Hur Jin Ho demands a naturalness in acting.
Known for his persistence in getting great performances,
he showed no mercy toward BYJ.
But BYJ lived up to the director’s expectations as seen by his performance.
There are scenes in the movie, AS, that are said to have taken 60 re-takes.
Sales Figures
250,000 copies – Number of DVDs in first shipment of Making of film AS
The Japanese DVD market currently considers a DVD a major hit
if it sells 50,000 copies.
But the Making of DVD which does not include the film AS
becomes a super, super, super hit by shipping 250,000 copies in its first shipment.
There is no way to gauge BYJ’s common sense.
CM Benefits
30% increase – percentage of “Oronamin C” sales increase
In August 2004, Otsuka Pharmaceuticals employed BYJ as their CM model
for “Oronamin C”
and announced in July of 2004 that their sales had increased by 30%
over the previous period in 2003.
It was nine years since Otsuka Pharmaceuticals had shown a sales increase
over the previous year’s performance.
Events
40,000 people – Number of applications received for fan event during first Japan visit
During BYJ’s first Japan visit, a fan event was held on April 4.
IMX, the sponsor of this event, took 2,000 applications on the Internet
before the event.
But there were more than 40,000 applicants
ncreasing the odds of attending the event at 20 times over.
55,000 people – Number of fans at “April Snow – Reunion”
On August 31, 2006 the AS event was held at the Saitama Arena.
There were about 30,000 family at the Arena,
6,000 at the outlying satellite sites,
and when you include the webcast viewers,
you come up with this great number of family that enjoyed this day’s event.
400 people – Number of Japanese fans at Jeju Airport
Japanese family gathered in Jeju to get a glimpse of BYJ,
who had participated in the gosa ceremony (ceremony to pray
for the success of a project) for the drama TWSSG.
Airport Reception
3,500 people – Number of “family” to welcome him at Narita Airport
On April 25, 2004 BYJ visited Japan to promote the photo exhibit.
The number of family gathered at Narita International Airport on that day
set a new record for the number of people gathered to welcome a celebrity.
Contributions to Society
2006 Income Taxes Paid
$12.5 million – In 2005, his total income was 329 billion won
as a result of appearing in the film AS,
and receiving appearance fees for the Toyota and Sony CM’s in Japan.
As a result, he paid 97.5 billion won in taxes.
The rich are different after all.
$8 million – Amount donated from sales of autographed lipstick
Having announced that 70 yen from the sale of each lipstick
would be donated to breast cancer research,
Avon Products in Japan sold the Yonsama autographed lipstick.
Donations exceeded $8 million, showing the power of Yonsama.
Arrival on Japanese Shores
About 3 months – Period of time that TWSSG will air in Japan.
On September 10, 2007 TWSSG began its broadcast in Korea.
Prior to the final episode airing on December 5,
the subtitled version began airing in Japan on December 3.
The speed of such a precedent brought TWSSG to Japan.
Appeal of Founding Hallyu Stars Cannot be Measured
By looking at the huge numbers that BYJ has posted,
we can better understand his enormous greatness.
He is brilliant as an entrepreneur and his proven success attests to this,
but he has not slacked off in his efforts to return that success back to society.
His charitable activities have not been limited to just Korea
as he has also made contributions to Japan and to others overseas.
Yonsama does not pattern himself after anyone
but he takes the lead in whatever activity he takes on.
Because of who he is, he recorded the highest viewer ratings for a drama
in the history of the great nation of Korea
and he was able to bring about the large hallyu wave to Japan.
Finally the dubbed version of TWSSG will begin on April 5.
From this, there is no doubt that new traditions will again be made.
