Lifestyles: Wines to Become More Popular

The popularity of wine continues to grow significantly, and its transition from status symbol to daily delicacy is becoming evident.

“Les Gouttes de Dieu” (Drops of God), a Japanese comic book, has triggered the so-called “wine syndrome” in Korea this year. As wines grow in popularity, consumers are going more for table wines and bargain wines. Quality wines at reasonable prices are gaining popularity among smart shoppers.

According to Winenara, a wine distributor, the prices of the bestseller wines of this year range from 30,000 won to 40,000 won. Also, the Chilean and American wines were consumed equivalent to that of Italian and French wines, indicating that wine consumers are turning away from the Old World wines to wines of the New World like the United States, Australia, Chile and Argentina.

However, the imports of the high-tagged wines from Burgundy reached 2.35 million euro in 2006, annually growing by about 30 percent from 1.78 million euro in 2005 and 1.42 million euro in 2004, which are expected to polarize wine connoisseurs. http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/inclu...p?newsIdx=16193

Manga comics ignite interest in wine
December 12, 2007

Richard Woodard

Japanese Manga comics are driving up interest in wine ・particularly Bordeaux ・across Asia.

Manga comics combine elements of myth, mystery and heroism, and Kami no Shizuku ・translated as The Drops of God ・is a quasi-Arthurian quest saga with a twist: the hero is trying to track down 12 wines likened to Christ's disciples.

The series, with sales of more than 500,000 copies, has proved to be an unlikely but effective ambassador for wine, with individual bottles mentioned in the stories seeing sales sky-rocket across Japan, Korea and China.

An early mention of Bordeaux producer Despagne's Château Mont Perat 2001 led to one Taiwanese importer claiming sales of 50 cases in just two days.

Sales of Umberto Cosmo's Colli di Conegliano Rosso also leapt 30% after being mentioned in the Manga series.

The story centres on Shizuku Kanzaki, a young man whose wine expert father dies, leaving a will describing 12 wines, which are compared to the 12 disciples.

Whoever can track the wines down will win the father's wine collection ・a quest in which Shizuku is pitted against his adoptive brother, sommelier Issey Tomine.

The books are notable for their unconventional descriptions of the wines featured. For instance, Mont Perat is likened to a concert given by the rock group Queen, with the wine's acidity taking the place of Freddie Mercury's vocals.

Written by Yuko Kibayashi under a pen name and with the assistance of her brother Shin, the books are scheduled to continue for another four to five years, gradually revealing the names of the 12 'disciple' wines.

After securing publishing deals across Asia, Kami no Shizuku is due to be published in French during 2008. An Italian version is also being considered ・and there is even a possible film deal in the pipeline.

Divine drops
By SOPHIE HARDACH

An unusual comic series about fine wines is the toast of the wine-drinking lot.
THE aroma is like a rock concert, with notes of butterflies dancing over a pond and an aftertaste of Jesus Christ and his disciples.
Wine reviews with a twist are a speciality of Kami no Shizuku (The Drops of God), a manga series that has taken Japan by storm, is conquering South Korea and China, and has boosted European wine sales along the way.
Written by a brother-and-sister duo of wine enthusiasts, the manga combines a mystery plot with a playful introduction to European wines. Think The Da Vinci Code set in a Tokyo bar.

Intoxicating read ... a woman poring over copies of Kami no Shizuku(The Drops of God) is seen through a wine glass at a bar in Tokyo. – Reuters
“The minute it was translated into Korean, we had calls from three importers,” said Basaline Granger Despagne, whose family has grown wine near France’s Dordogne river for 250 years. Their Chateau Mont Perat 2001 Bordeaux appears early on in the manga.
“When it was translated into Chinese, people called us from Taiwan saying, ‘I bought some Mont Perat and sold 50 cases in two days because of the manga,’” she said in a recent phone interview.
In South Korea, businessmen drop names from the serialised book into chats with reporters and shops display “Drops of God” signs.
Wine industry experts believe part of the manga’s appeal is that it teaches readers enough about wine to understand the drink and impress their friends, but does so in an entertaining way.
The main character of the manga, a young man called Shizuku Kanzaki, discovers the beauty of wine after his father, a famous wine critic, dies and leaves an unusual will: a description of 12 wines he considers to be the best in the world, comparing them to Jesus Christ’s disciples.
The first person to find these “disciples” will inherit the father’s wine collection, a contest that pits Shizuku against his adoptive brother, Issey Tomine, who works as a sommelier.
It rocks!
Their quest to find the “Drops of God” is illustrated by double-page manga graphics visualising the heavenly wines.
A dark, dark forest with a pond and the aforementioned butterflies depicts the taste of one “disciple”.
Shizuku’s first sip of Mont Perat, on the other hand, triggers a vision of blurred faces, guitar-strumming musicians and raving fans.
“I know what you mean – it’s like Queen!” Shizuku’s friend, a barman, exclaims, referring to Freddie Mercury’s rock band. They go on to compare the wine’s acidity to Mercury’s voice, wrapped in the thick sound of guitars and drums.
Yuko Kibayashi, who writes the scenario for the manga with her brother Shin under a pen name, said the idea for the series came to them when they tasted a Burgundy wine that impressed them so much they turned into wine aficionados.
In an e-mailed exchange recently, she said the manga is not sponsored by anyone and they choose the wines based on their own independent research, including trips abroad and tastings.
“We mention wines that we’ve actually drunk and felt were delicious,” Kibayashi wrote.
“The kind of ‘betrayal’ of writing that a wine we didn’t like is delicious would pose the danger of destroying the manga.”
Kibayashi’s view is reflected in the manga, where wines costing 1,000-2,000 yen (RM27-RM55) spark just as much excitement and colourful visions among the characters as pricier liquids.
The thirst for wine
Umberto Cosmo, an Italian wine producer, was thrilled when his family’s much-loved Colli di Conegliano Rosso Contrada di Concenigo appeared in the manga. The Cosmos drink their Colli di Conegliano red with meals at home, and that’s how it was presented in the manga: a good, moderately-priced table wine for everyday enjoyment.
Speaking by telephone from Italy, Cosmo said sales of the wine jumped some 30% after the manga came out.
Drinking wine the way the Cosmos do – in a relaxed setting, with friends or family, accompanied by simple food – is a familiar concept to most Europeans, but not to many Asians.
Wine remains an expensive status symbol in much of Asia, to be savoured in a top restaurant complete with a haughty sommelier as stiff as the starched white tablecloths.
Japan probably has the most developed wine scene in the region. At a recent wine-tasting in Tokyo’s Grand Hyatt hotel, row after row of Japanese wine lovers were expertly slurping, spitting and taking notes as German sommelier Markus Del Monego explained what they were drinking.

The Da Vinci Code set in a Tokyo bar? Yoshida Takefumi, the owner of wine bar Elevage in Tokyo, displays a bottle of French wine Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee da Capo 2000 (Domaine Pegau) and a page of Kami no Shizuku manga. – Reuters
“In Europe, wine is a piece of grown culture. Europe has been shaped by wine for centuries,” said Del Monego, a former sommelier world champion who frequently travels to Asia.
“In China, the wine scene is just emerging. It consists of a very small part of society that’s very price-oriented, because it’s in an exploratory phase. That phase has already passed in Japan,” he added.
Early next year, The Drops of God will be published in French, possibly followed by Italian. The original book series is expected to continue for another five years or so, and there is talk of a film.
All this is likely to further stimulate the thirst for wine.
Supply, however, may hit a natural limit: there is only so much high-quality wine any given territory will yield.
And wine producers may not even want to sell that widely – Basaline Granger Despagne said her family had been approached by distributors in mainland China but had so far found no one to whom they felt comfortable selling their wine.
In the meantime, the search for the manga’s remaining “disciples” – only three have been identified so far – will keep manga fans, wine importers and vintners on their toes. – Reuters http://thestar.com.my/lifestyle/story.asp?...c=lifebookshelf

A manga drunk on French wine
Siblings Yuko and Shin Kibayashi move the market with a fluid pen

By FELICITY HUGHES
Special to The Japan Times
Hearing a 2001 Mont-Perat described as "just like a rock concert by Queen" is enough to make any self-respecting Frenchman expel a snort of derision from his finely-tuned nostrils.

Long popular in Japan, "Kami no Shizuku" is now being translated into French as "Les Gouttes de Dieu." © GLENAT

But the enormous impact the wine manga "Kami no Shizuku (The Drops of the Gods)" has had on wine sales across Asia cannot be shrugged off with a boff of Gallic unconcern. Just two days after the issue with that particular comment came out, a Taiwanese importer sold 50 cases of Mont-Perat.
Thus, when the French version — titled "Les Gouttes de Dieu" — was published in France last week, it came out in a storm of media attention. Long popular in Japan, "Kami no Shizuku" is now being translated into French as "Les Gouttes de Dieu." © GLENAT
"We had a team from French TV in Japan for the last month interviewing the authors for a report on the increasing sales of wine in Japan, which — due to 'The Drops of the Gods' — are said to be up by more than 20 percent," says Stephane Ferrand of Glenat, the manga's publisher. The camera crew are just packing away their gear when The Japan Times arrives to interview the authors, siblings Yuko and Shin Kibayashi, who cowrite the manga under the pen name of Tadashi Agi.
The interview takes place at Shin's house, which in a way embodies the spirit of the manga itself by combining classical European features with a contemporary edge: A grand piano sits in one corner of the room, while at the other end is a gigantic screen for viewing movies.
"Most young Japanese children have no contact with European culture, but we had a lot of influences when we were growing up," says a relaxed Shin, his arm across the back of a grand leather couch designed to seat around 15. "Our mother was an artist and our grandfather taught us about French cuisine. When we were in kindergarten, he took us to French restaurants."
This is the room where the pair plot each installment of the manga, which has been published weekly in Morning magazine since 2004, and regularly hold wine-tasting parties.
Prior to working with his sister, Shin was in television. He has the easy charisma of someone used to dealing with the media. Yuko is also unruffled by press attention. Dressed casually and attractively, her makeup discrete, she radiates poise and authority. They obviously work well together, her gravitas providing the counterweight to his bubbling enthusiasm.
"While we are drinking wine, we play a kind of game to try to find an unusual phrase that sums up the experience, not using the sort of language a sommelier would use, but using images to make it sound more delicious," explains Yuko. "For example, is it a male or female wine?"
The two main characters of the comic book have their own personalities based on wine regions.
"We wanted to create someone with the personality of a Bordeaux, so the character of Shizuku is very cheerful and friendly," Yuko continues. "On the other hand, we wanted an opposite type to balance him out. So we made up Issey, who is modeled on the wines of Burgundy. He's more complex."
Shizuku was the original protagonist of the drama: a young wine neophyte who is given the challenge of discovering 12 legendary wines when his father, a wine critic, dies suddenly. Shizuku's father has made Issey, a wine expert, into Shizuku's rival by adopting him. Whichever son succeeds in finding the bottles inherits the father's valuable collection of rare vintages.

Yuko and Shin Kibayashi have cowritten the manga "Kami no Shizuku (The Drops of the Gods)" under the pen name of Tadashi Agi since 2004.
Though Shizuku was supposed to be the hero of the manga, Issey's character was developed in response to letters from fans.
"Women love these lonely characters," says Shin. "But Shizuku, like the reader, doesn't know much about wine, so they can discover wine knowledge with him.
"We've had an especially strong effect in South Korea," he says. "Soon after our book was published there, people started reading it like a textbook to learn about wine."
The manga is also published in China and Taiwan, where, when a wine is featured, sales increase. Bottles of Colli di Conegliano Rosso Contrada di Concenigo saw an increase of 30 percent after a mention.
"We are pleased to recommend wine to people. But the bad thing is when the price goes up because we recommend one," says Shin. "We recommend cheap wines and also expensive ones, but if it's not tasty we don't include it."
For French readers, the real draw is the huge bias the manga has toward the wines of France.
"French wine is made to very strict rules," points out Shin. "For example, whether it's a good or bad year, the practice of putting a sheet over the vines to protect them from the rain is forbidden."
"In America, they are only concerned with producing healthy grapes, like a factory," continues Yuko. "They don't trust in nature. When it doesn't rain, they water the fields, and when it rains too much, they cover the fields."
Doubtless, the French won't have a problem with the Kibayashi's bias toward the country. What might be more problematic is the colorful language employed to describe the wines.
"The first wine in (the French version of) the manga, Les Amours Chambourd Musigny, 1999, we described as being like walking in a quiet forest and being followed by two butterflies," says Shin.
"One we're writing now is a description of the feeling you get after climbing the summit of the Matterhorn and you look down at the ground," adds Yuko.
French-wine expert Tim Johnston, who owns Juveniles bar in Paris, wasn't sure if the French — given such off-the-wall descriptions — could swallow the manga.
"It doesn't seem to me like a serious art form, and the French are so stuffy about wine," says Johnston. "I can't see it going down well with the establishment."
If the manga manages to break through these barriers to become a success in France, it will pave the way for an Italian edition. For now the signs are positive.
"We exhibited at Paris Book Fair last month and had a great welcome from the public," says publisher Ferrand. "We sold all 300 volumes of the manga that we had at our booth in three days."
Another French-wine expert, Michel Dovaz, who wrote the introduction to the French edition, obviously supports it.
"I think the manga demystifies wine a little," says Dovaz. "If we take wine too seriously, we can take the joy out of it."
Bringing your own
As well as entertaining at home, authors Yuko and Shin Kibayashi love to dine out. They are — not surprisingly — particularly fond of restaurants where you are allowed to bring your own bottle. Yuko recommended her favorite such eatery.
"I love Kagurazaka and Bar Poisson Seafood Dining in Idabashi," she says. "The owner is a wine aficionado and has traveled all around Burgundy. He is also excellent at wine tasting. Although the restaurant allows BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle), the wines in the restaurant itself are reasonably priced and taste wonderful." Expect to pay ¥4,000-7,000 per person for meals — and an extra ¥2,500 corkage charge for the privilege of opening your own bottle.

Other BYOB restaurants in Tokyo include:
Cuisine219 in Aoyama, which specializes in Californian dishes, uses only seasonal vegetables to create its menu. Dinner is from around ¥2,500 per person, with an extra corkage charge of ¥2,000.

Il Girasole in Shinjuku specializes in Italian dishes and is known for excellent seafood. Though the dinner course starts from a pricey ¥4,000, there is no corkage charge.

Black Heart in Kokubunji specializes in "rustic continental cuisine," though Burgundian-style snails and oysters doesn't exactly smack of the simple life. Expect to pay around ¥2,000 for dinner. Corkage is free.

Il Bianco in Roppongi is another Italian restaurant that offers BYOB. An evening meal costs around ¥3,000, with an extra ¥2,000 corkage charge.

Les Gouttes de Dieu
Les Gouttes de Dieu (神之雫 Kami no Shizuku?, Drops of God in English) is a popular Japanese comic about wines. It is written by Tadashi Agi and drawn by Shu Okimoto. It was first serialized in November 2004 in Weekly Morning magazine in Japan, and still runs to date.

Plot
Kanzaki Shizuku (神咲雫), is the son of a recently deceased, world renowned wine critic Kanzaki Yutaka (神咲豐多香) who owns a vast wine collection. In order to take ownership of his legacy, he must find 13 wines, known as the "12 apostles" and the "Les Gouttes de Dieu" that his father described in his will. He has a competitor called Toomine Itsusei (遠峰一青), a renowned young wine critic, who is his father's adopted son.
Shizuku has never drunk or has any previous knowledge about wines, but with strong senses of taste and smell, plus knowledge gained from his time with his father, and with support from his friends and colleagues like sommelier trainee Shinohara Miyabi (紫野原雅), Shizuku submerged himself in the world of wines and try to solve the mysteries of the 13 wines and defeat Toomine Itsusei. http://www.asahi.com/food/column/nommelier/ http://kdd.asahi.com/food/column/nommelier...0703270532.html http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E7%A5%9E%E3%81%AE...27254/ref=noism http://www.7andy.jp/books/detail/? isbn=9784063727258 http://item.rakuten.co.jp/book/5804801/

The art of wine - manga style

Two brothers on an epic comic-book odyssey to find the ultimate classic wine. Only in Japan? No - the Far East's take on wine tasting is coming to Britain

Japanese manga comics are best known for their adult blend of mythical beasts, lonely heroes and violent martial arts. So it might come as a surprise to learn that the hottest manga storyline, currently gripping Korean CEOs and Chinese car plant drones, centres on two polite chaps travelling around the world and tasting wine.

The Drops of God: Manga comics based on wine

Kami No Shizuku – or The Drops Of God – has been wildly popular with manga fans since its creation in 2004, and is considered a bible for ordinary wine-lovers scared by stuffy wine magazines.

Sales have topped a million copies in South Korea alone, with sales of wine shooting up by 30 per cent in response.

The ten-volume series sees two brothers given the challenge of locating 12 legendary wines when their father, a wine critic, dies suddenly.

Whichever son succeeds in the challenge inherits their father's ??9 million wine cellar. (The exact contents of the cellar are not revealed in the first series, but the chances are that Cliff Richard's Vida Nova missed the cut...)

Printed mostly in black and white and drawn to look like an ancient Japanese woodblock print, the secret of its success lies in the brilliant, sensual – and ever more outrageous – wine descriptions. 'Just like a classic rock concert!' says one brother after taking a sip of a 2001 Mont-P?rat.

'Like walking in a quiet forest being followed by two butterflies,' exclaims the other brother.

It's hardly Decanter magazine, but Shin and Yuko Kibayashi, the wine-loving brother-and-sister team behind the comic who write under pseudonyms, take a perverse interest in dispensing with tedious wine terminology.

'We try to find an unusual phrase that sums up the experience, not using the sort of language a sommelier would use, but using images to make it sound delicious,' says Yuko.

Any individual wine lucky enough to be name-checked can expect to sell an extra 50 cases within 48 hours – the Asian equivalent of the 'Delia Effect'.

Such is the comic's status in South Korea that parents often slip a copy into their children's suitcase before they leave for university, in the hope it will inspire them to develop sophisticated palettes.

Having conquered Asia, The Drops Of God is now teeing up Europe. Issue one has just come out in France.

'It works because a lot of people are scared of fine wine,' says Delphine Katrantzis of French publisher Gl?nat, which took the brave step of publishing it in the home of the wine snob. 'In fact, at the beginning the hero has never even drunk a glass of wine, so it's a learning curve the readers can identify with.' Next stop, Britain.

'It's an exciting prospect for us,' says Emma Hayley of graphic novel publisher Self Made Hero, which last year released a manga version of Shakespeare. 'It demystifies fine wine and puts the fun back into tasting.'

Meanwhile, a spin-off computer game called Sommelier has been launched in Japan, and Hollywood directors are angling for the movie rights. Malcolm Gluck, your days are numbered.

2008年3月27日 9:52:13 The Drops of God: Burgundy in a manga
http://blog.vinexpo.com/en/2008/03/27/The+...In+A+Manga.aspx

The first album of the Japanese manga entitled Kami no Shizuku (“The drops of God”), which makes several references to the great wines of Burgundy and their qualities is due to be published in French in early April. In Asia, the impact of this cartoon on wine sales has been substantial. This is especially clear in South Korea, where Burgundy used to be little drunk and where sales have now grown by 20%. The Drops of God - Manga Boosts French Wine.

Wines with “aromatic black currant undertones” sound nice, but a wine that’s described as the band Queen in a bottle? How could your interest not be piqued?

Thanks to this description of French winemaker Thibault Despagne’s 2001 Chateau Mont-Perat in the oenophile manga, “Kami no Shizuki” (“The Drops of God”), the company’s sales have rocketed in Asia.

The manga, written by a brother-sister duo under the pen name Tadashi Agi, features two wine connoisseurs as the main characters. It’s almost like a “wine textbook,” intertwining stories with creative wine descriptions. Perfect for the young, amateur wine drinker.

In 2004, Despagne collaborated with Japanese wine distributor Vintners Inc. to create an original Les Amants du Chateau Mont-Perat. As soon as 20,000 bottles of the wine hit the Japanese market, they sold out within a day.

Despagne told the Asahi Shimbun: "I'm amazed with the influence of that manga in Asia and in Japan, in particular. I've had some good articles from (Robert) Parker and other wine people, but the impact of the manga is huge."

Dear Baesister,

Wine imports in South Korea have jumped 30 percent since 2005, thanks in large part to a popular manga in which the beverage plays a key role.

Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reports that Kami no Shizuku (Drops of God), by Agi Tadashi and Okimoto Agi, has sold some 700,000 volumes since it was released in South Korea in 2005. (In Japan, the nine volumes have sold 950,000 copies, according to ComiPress.)

Every time the manga introduces a new wine, Asahi Shimbun notes, that wine sells out. Because of its prominence in the series, wine from the Bourgogne region of France is particularly popular among South Koreans

FEATURE-Taste of heaven: Manga spreads 'Drops of God' in Asia

By Sophie Hardach

TOKYO, June 4 (Reuters) - The aroma is like a rock concert, with notes of butterflies dancing over a pond and an aftertaste of Jesus Christ and his disciples.

Wine reviews with a twist are a speciality of "Kami no Shizuku" ("The Drops of God"), a manga comic series that has taken Japan by storm, is conquering Korea and China and has boosted European wine sales along the way.

Written by a brother-and-sister duo of wine enthusiasts, the manga comic combines a mystery plot with a playful introduction to European wines. Think "The Da Vinci Code" set in a Tokyo bar.

"The minute it was translated into Korean, we had calls from three importers," said Basaline Granger Despagne, whose family has grown wine near France's Dordogne river for 250 years. Their Chateau Mont Perat 2001 Bordeaux appears early on in the manga.

"When it was translated into Chinese, people called us from Taiwan saying, 'I bought some Mont Perat and sold 50 cases in two days because of the manga'," she said in a phone interview.

In Korea, businessmen drop names from the serialised book into chats with reporters and shops display "Drops of God" signs.

Wine industry experts believe part of the manga's appeal is that it teaches readers enough about wine to understand the drink and impress their friends, but does so in an entertaining way.

Kami no Shizuku (Les gouttes de Dieu)

Felicity Hughes has written up a wonderful interview she did with Tadashi Agi about their manga series Kami no Shizuku (The Drops of the Gods) in order to gauge their reaction to the manga's debut in the French language. Tadashi Agi is the pen name of the brother and sister team that writes the storyline: Shin and Yuko Kibayashi. The illustrations are done by Shu Okimoto.

The manga, which has been running in weekly installments since 2004, tells the story of Shizuku Kanzaki, a young wine connoisseur whose father, renowned wine critic Yudora Kanzaki has just passed away. Shizuku must compete against his rival and adopted brother, wine critic Itsusei Tomine to find his father's 12 most prized wines - the 'gouttes de Dieu' of the title. The person who finds them all will inherit the father's prized wine collection. The wines featured in the manga are not fictitious, and the authors describe them romantic, exaggerated language.

Kami no Shizuku has already had tremendous success in South Korea and China, so I feel sure it is only a matter of time before it gets adapted into an anime. The series has clearly already done for French wine sales in Asia what Nodame Cantabile did for popularizing classical music study for teenagers. The only false note in Hughes's otherwise delightful article, were the opinions of French wine expert Tim Johnson, who claimed "It doesn't seem to me like a serious art form, and the French are so stuffy about wine. . . I can't see it going down well with the establishment." Clearly Monsieur Johnson is ignorant about the popularity of Japanese culture, in both its high and low forms, in France. The French are avid manga and anime consumers and I feel sure that the French wine industry, which has been suffering at the hands of competition from America and Australia, won't turn their noses up at some free advertising in a work of popular fiction.

This manga sounds like a lot of fun (I've had a glimpse at illicit scans of it online), and I've been looking for something fun to read in my down time (ie when I'm not watching experimental films for my research). I'm not sure that I can wait to get a hold of a copy of the manga from Japan, so I may order the debut copy from Amazon.fr. I can add it to my order of Naomi Kawase's films Moe no suzaku (1997) and Sharasojyu (2003) which are very reasonably priced in France. If you are a Japanese film collector and can read French (or don't need subtitles), it is definitely worth looking at what's available on DVD in France. They have a wide range of Japanese cinema and anime that one cannot find in North America or the UK, and it is much cheaper than buying DVDs from Japan.

Winter Sonata's Bae Eyeing Kami no Shizuku Drama Role
posted on 2008-08-27 13:01 EDT
Kami no Shizuku (Les Gouttes de Dieu) wine manga is popular in Asia

Bae Yong-Joon, the actor who became a household name in South Korea and Japan with his starring role in the Winter Sonata (Fuyu no Sonata) drama, is considering a drama version of Tadashi Agi and Shū Okimoto's Kami no Shizuku (Les Gouttes de Dieu or The Drops of God) wine manga for his next role. Bae's agency said he is starting the process of developing and negotiating for the drama version. The manga has been so popular in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan that sales of specific wines labels and years mentioned in the manga have spiked in Taiwan and other Asian countries.

The story follows a young man's quest to identify the twelve wines described in his late father's will. Writer Agi's family are big fans of Bae, and Agi had actually modeled Kami no Shizuku's young wine critic character, Issei Tōmine, on Bae. The manga has been running in Kodansha's Morning magazine since 2004.

Bae and his Winter Sonata co-star Choi Ji-Woo are reprising their roles for the Korean/Japanese animated film version of the Winter Sonata drama.

Bae Yong-joon, avid reader 'Kami no Shizuku (Les Gouttes de Dieu)'

2007/05/02
Bae Yong-joon is said to be an avid reader of 'Kami no Shizuku (Les Gouttes de Dieu)' and is interested in wine and wine production.

In a recently published interview with CEO Sohn Il Hyung of IMX, Bae Yong-joon's agency of Japan, he noted that Bae Yong-joon has a special interest in wine.

When Bae Yong-joon visited Japan on the 8th, he took four bottles of wine to where Bae Yong-joon was staying and discussed the origins of the wine, and that Bae Yong-joon has a great understanding of the winery process.

CEO Sohn Il Hyung says he does not drink too much but has become an avid wine taster because of Bae Yong-joon.

Last year, IMX also offered 1972 Colheita wine from Portugal to commemorate Bae Yong-joon's birthday.

An interview with Bae Yong-joon was also published in the recent manga magazine publishing 'Kami no Shizuku' where he says, "I do not usually read manga but I read all of 'Kami no Shizuku. I also do not like drinking too much but am greatly enjoying wine. I have wanted to try the wine that appears in the series but they are rather hard to find. As each wine has a story of its own like a movie, I truly think wine could have been a present of god".

He concluded the interview saying, "I am only an avid reader right now, but I subtly hope that one day I can work with the series in any way. I will support the original creators looking forward to many more moving episodes".

'Kami no Shizuku' is a manga series by Agi Tadashi and Okimoto Shuu about wine and has gathered much popularity in Korea as well.

Les Gouttes de Dieu

Les Gouttes de Dieu (Kami no Shizuki, or Drops of God) is a popular manga on wine written by Tadashi Agi and designed by Shu Okimoto. It was first published in November 2004 in the Morning Weekly, a magazine featuring pre-manga, and continues to appear.

Story

Shizuku Kanzaki is the son of world-renowned oenologist, Kanzaki Yutaka recently deceased owner of a great collection of wine. In his will, he describes twelve great wines and a mysterious thirteenth ideal/perfect wine named "Les Gouttes de Dieu". To take possession of his legacy Shizuku will have to discover which wines they are in competition with his brother Issei Tomine, adopted by his father a week before his death.

A global phenomenon

Instant success in Japan, Les Gouttes de Dieu has already been translated in many languages each having immense success. Translated into Korean, this title has sold over a million copies! Indeed, the attractiveness for this exciting series has also aroused in this country a real passion for wine. The Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne (BIVB) has indeed announced that sales of Bourgogne (Burgundy) in Korea are increasing thanks to the series of "Drops of God" by Japanese Tadashi Agi and Shu Okimoto. In the wine bars, Koreans are increasingly likely to request the wines presented in the manga. According Myong Joo Im, correspondant for BIVB in Seoul, she was questioned by the AFP about the popularity of the manga; Koreans go in wine bars with the manga under their arms and ask to taste a particular wine that is presented in the manga.

The cited wines in Volume 1

Domaine Bizot les Jachées - Vosne-Romanée - 2000
Richebourg Vosnes romanée 1er cru, 1997
Rosso Miani
Château Mont-Pérat - Côtes de Bordeaux - 2001
Domaine de la Romanée Conti - Richebourg - 1990
Pomard Rugiens Bas 2000
Domaine de la Romanée Conti - Richebourg Grand cru - 1959
Château Mouton Rothschild – Pauillac – 1982
Opus One 2000
Château Léoville Las Cases 1983
Château Baron Pichon-Longueville

Preface

This is to be commemorated: these "Les Gouttes de Dieu" have not usurped their title as heroes and the readers are confronted to the top of the top and visit areas that are outstanding where the bottles are to be created. The Chateau d'Yquem 1990, Château Mouton Rothschild 1982 and also 1999 Richebourg from Méo-Camuzet, just to name a few from among over 1000 wine bottles…
The coming together of fiction and reality! For fiction, the fabric of the story, for reality, wine, grapes, the wine, the wine growers. During his wanderings, the hero lets himself be seduced by the wine, he discovered the grapes, soil, the art of winemaking. The reader too explores the great vineyards of the world, they also learn about the best wines and they try tasting wine.
In the twentieth century, many books of initiation to wines explained oenology very seriously. Learning came before pleasure and what is wine without pleasure? In the same spirit, Claude Debussy said "music can not be taught: pleasure is the rule".

Story

When the prestigious oenologist Yutaka Kanzaki dies, his will is clear: his extraordinary wine cellar will be given to one of his two son who will solve 12 riddles about 12 wines. He would then discover a mysterious 13th and wine, unknown to everyone, nicknamed "Les Gouttes de Dieu". A treasure hunt in the form of police investigation will present the two brothers to the characters and opposite paths. Mysteries and investigations happen around the most prestigious wines in the world. The two brothers who are enemies engaged in a race to find the Gouttes de Dieu. Through this confrontation, the scenario leads the reader on a discovery of the world of wine, its language, its own traditions.

From The Times September 11, 2008 Cartoon wine critic Shizuku Kanzaki boosts Japanese sales
The comic character Kami no Shizuku, who has provoked a glut of wine-buying in Japan
Leo Lewis in Tokyo
Entire 20,000-bottle shipments of burgundy sell out within hours in Tokyo if he so much as looks at a glass, South Korea's biggest film star is lined-up to play him in a TV drama and he has converted thousands of Asian women into the most discerning oenophiles.

In the rarefied world of superstar sommeliers, there may be none greater than Shizuku Kanzaki. The only snag is that he is a cartoon.

Despite his two-dimensional limitations, the hero of Kami no Shizuku (The drops of the gods) has emerged as an extraordinarily potent mover of Asian wine markets — far more so, say some in the industry, than flesh-and-blood wine critics.

The sales records of Japan's largest wine merchants have been smashed because, in a single frame of comic, the hero has uttered a dreamy sigh over a 2006 New Zealand Riesling or closed his eyes in appreciation of a Saint-Aubin Premier Cru.

France relaxes wine rules to fight New World
Enoteca, one of Japan's top-end importers, admitted that the comic character has even begun to influence its stock ordering decisions.

Shizuku's adventures are read by about 500,000 Japanese each week and book collections of the comics have sold millions of copies. Wines that feature in his weekly manga activities regularly become overnight hits, particularly for Japan's frenetic online wine markets.

In Taiwan a single reference to a relatively obscure French terroir shifted dozens of cases of the stuff within a few days.

He has sent the prices of some vintages soaring and, in some cases, tripled sales of particular wines. Some wine importers in Japan say they have never encountered such a powerful single influence on their business.

Shizuku's quest for the world's 12 greatest wines has served to push Japanese wine drinkers towards a more sophisticated, complex experience. Sommelier courses for Japanese women are fully booked.

Yukie Bunya, the chief wine buyer for All Nippon Airways, told The Times that she has had to recraft the in-flight wine lists to accommodate a new generation of wine snobs.

In South Korea, meanwhile, translations of his adventures are believed to have triggered a wine boom, making it a serious competitor for beer and local rice-based spirits.

For many off-licence stores in Seoul, Kami no Shizuku has dramatically altered their business. Where once wine represented less than a third of sales, in some shops it now accounts for 70 or 80 per cent. The boom is expected to go even farther now that Bae Yong Joon — a South Korean heartthrob — is said to be considering portraying Shizuku in a film.

The comic is the creation of a brother and sister team in Japan, who use the pseudonym Tadashi Agi. It follows the continuing quest of Shizuku to track down the “Twelve Apostles” — a collection of wines described by our hero's father in his will.

Each week various wines are tasted and their backgrounds woven into the plot. The prize at the end of Shizuku's quest is the key to his father's wine cellar, which, because the man was a great wine critic, is a truly magnificent treasure trove.

His search is not without rivalry, however. Shizuku's journey into viticulture and oenophilia is dogged by Toomine Itsusei, himself a celebrated, and entirely fictional, wine critic who also has his heart set on getting hold of that cellar.

Bae Yong-joon's Management Agency to Produce 'Drops of God'

"Drops of God," a new drama series expected to feature Bae Yong-joon as the leading man, will be produced by the actor's management agency, Keyeast Inc. The company recently said it has decided to produce the drama, slated for broadcast in the second half of 2009. It will be the first drama production for the company.

Drops of God is a phenomenally popular Japanese comic series written by Tadashi Agi and illustrated by Shu Okimoto that gave birth to a worldwide wine boom. Keyeast Inc, which recently bought the copyright for the Korean drama version of Drops of God, said it is looking for writers, directors and cast for the show, which is scheduled to air in the second half of next year. It added that there is a high chance that Bae will take on the leading role of Itse Tomine.

The company said Bae, who is still recovering from an injury he suffered while shooting "Taewangsashingi," visits the office whenever he can to discuss the direction of the drama, and studies wine in his free time.

New Drama Series“Water Drops of God” To Star Bae Yong-jun Late 2009

Hallyu sensation Bae Yong-jun will be returning to television screens in a new drama series about wine. The show "Water Drops of God" is slated to hit screens toward the end of 2009.
The drama is based on the original bestselling Japanese animation series that soon stirred up a newfound interest in wine throughout Japan shortly after its release. The Japanese version begins with an internationally renowned wine critic named ‘Kanjiki Yutaka’ who offers his life’s fortune, including his entire wine collection, to anyone able to find the 12 bottles of wine called the ’12 Apostles’ along with a bottle of wine named the "Water Drops of God". This, in turn, triggers a rally between his son, ‘Kanzaki Sizuku’, and adopted son, ‘Tomini Itze’ to complete the mission. Interestingly enough, the original authors of this Japanese cartoon, the ‘Agi Tadashi’ brother and sister, modeled the ‘Tomini Itze’ character after Bae Yong-jun.

As Bae Yong-jun rested up and received treatments for his injuries during his last drama in 2007, "Taewangsasingi," he began studying about wine in order to prepare for the drama. Furthermore, Bae Yong-jun will be returning to provide the male voice over lead in the animated version of the popular drama "Winter Sonata", along with Choi Ji-wu.
