Blending Culture Into Everyday Life

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

Traditional culture may start in museums and ancient palaces for some, but for Lee Hyo-jae, commonly known as Hyo-jae, it starts in the middle of the household.

``Tradition starts with `eui' (clothes), `sik' (food), `ju' (home). It is not something that can be defined by history books and statistics, but by living it,'' she told The Korea Times during an interview at her home in Seongbuk-dong, northern Seoul.

``It's something that can be appreciated in our everyday lives.''

Flipping through the culture section of newspapers, it is easy to find the 51-year-old on their pages. Most recently, she appeared at the press event for hallyu star's Bae Yong-joon's book last September.

`Sallimist'

Lee started her career early as a designer of Korean traditional costume, ``hanbok,'' thanks to her mother who ran a hanbok shop when she was young.

``Young people didn't want to do anything related to hanbok, even when I was young. We were all interested in the recent trends like jeans at the time,'' she said.

But as time went by, Lee was naturally drawn to the colorful and graceful clothing, along with the tradition and culture it brought to the makers and also the people who wear them.

This led her to become a ``sallimist,'' a word that roughly translates into a life stylist ― ``sallim'' literally means running a household.

``I see myself as a person from the Joseon Kingdom. I have always enjoyed making small and pretty things ― from cell phone charms to clothes and bags ― with traditional material like ropes and `bojagi' (Korean wrapping cloths) and I don't like change much.''

Lee does not have a television, nor does she use the Internet much. She only recently started using her cell phone, and this is one of the many things she is looking forward to stop.

``Every house wife in Korea does 'sallim.' The difference is that I tend to follow traditional ways and try to bring out our culture. It's nothing new, but just something many people find it hard to follow, or simply forget,'' Lee said.

This traditional sallim method of hers enabled her to write several books, including the recent ``Like Hyo-jae, with Your Hands,'' which offers her ideas in decorating, the Korean way.

``I have been living like this all my life, and it's interesting that people started to take interest in my work. The sallim people knew about was just the tip of the iceberg, and many people come to me asking `do you really live life that?' Of course, I do. Many housewives think doing sallim is grueling work, but for me, it's what I do for a living, literally,'' she said, smiling and taking a sip of warm tea.

Living the Tradition

The main priority for Lee these days is how to embrace tradition within our lives.

``Every culture is beautiful. The only true characteristic we Koreans have is that we are Asian with yellowy skin and that we use Korean. Other than that, we are living in a mix matched world of different cultures. It's impossible to demand the younger generation and the world to follow our tradition,'' she said.

Many Koreans have recognized the beauty of their tradition and have chosen to follow it by moving into hanok or wearing reformed hanbok. But for Lee, it was accepting the circumstances and making the best of it.

``Gyeongbok Palace is beautiful, but it is not used as it was in the past. It has become a relic. The guards rotating at the palace in traditional uniforms are carrying out a job, not tradition,'' Lee said.

Lee's efforts in blending Korean culture into the modern and busy lifestyles have attracted many, and her house has become a cultural spot for students and public figures visiting Korea.

``I noticed that foreigners are more interested in practical aspects in life and I agree this is important. Walking along the empty halls of ancient palaces can be educational, but experiencing the modernized version of traditional Korean life can also be effective,'' said the designer. She often holds bojagi classes for students to learn the versatile uses of the traditional cloth.

Walking around her house is a delightful surprise, with small windows decorated with ``hanji,'' Korean traditional paper for both style and as a blinder, while presents and utensils are wrapped with colorful bojagis.

``This house never met a Korean owner for the past 20 years. But look at it now. I have added traditional touches to it and changed the big, modern house into a Korean one. People need to realize that preserving tradition is not about escaping modernity, but bringing the two together harmoniously. You can live in a modern apartment and still live Korean.''

Future Plans

Lee has been busy with magazine shoots, interviews and also as goodwill ambassadors for various cultural events and festivals the past year. But the most important schedule on her list now is traveling around the world with her bojagi art.

``People love bojagi because of the color and versatility, and also because it is environment friendly,'' she said.

Lee already wowed more than 40,000 fans with her bojagi art performance during Bae's (known as yonsama by Japanese fans) event held at the Tokyo Dome, Japan, last September.

She is preparing for an exhibition with renowned Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake this month.

``I have worked with Volkswagen, cosmetics brand Clinique and famous cookware company Fissler, and now Issey Miyake! My dream is to travel around the world with my bojagi art,'' she said.

When asked if she didn't feel tired of showing everything through books and television shows, from her wardrobe, kitchen to even her bathroom, Lee smiled and shook her head.

``Actors show their talents through dramas and movies, but I show my whole household. I cannot talk about my work as a sallimist, hanbok designer and bojagi artist without talking about my own life and home. As I said, tradition and culture can be understood through all the aspects of living,'' she said.

While making cell phone charms with a colorful piece of thin rope, Lee added that we need to appreciate our everyday lives.

``I'm always satisfied. Some countries put meaning in people's everyday lifestyles, while some do on professions. Tradition and beauty should not be found only in museums and ancient palaces, but should be found within us in our lives,'' she said, quickly answering her phone. Her ringtone? The ``gugak,'' or Korean traditional music, version of the Beatles' ``Let it Be.''

Hanbok artist makes Korean style simple and easy
Date: December 19, 2008

PEOPLE*

Hanbok artist Lee Hyo-jaeLee Hyo-jae, traditional clothing artist, had no idea when the media first introduced her as Korea's Martha Stuart or Korea's Tasha Tudor -- both internationally well-known for their dexterity in homemaking and gardening respectively.

"I could learn about Martha from her book, which was sent by a reporter. And Tasha's book is what I receive most frequently as gift," she said.

Now 51, she runs a Hanbok workshop which was passed on by her mother nearly twenty years ago, along with sewing skills. She usually creates Hanbok, traditional Korean dress, and other goods such as bedclothes and Hanbok accessories, used especially for wedding preparations, called "yedan" in Korean.

After her house and homemaking activities based on tradition were featured through several publications and television programs, her name "Hyojae" became a household brand that reinterprets Korean style in a simple and practical way.

"People easily misunderstand that I'm good at decorating. But I pursue extremely simple and practical style. I just put some hint of tradition and my style to hide some ugly things like a nail on a wall," she said. "For me, roses are too complicated."

She has recently moved to a new house and a TV channel aired a one-hour program featuring her moving process in May. Located in Seongbuk-dong, northern Seoul, the two-story house, once the former residence of a foreign ambassador, has transformed into a beautiful home with a Korean touch.

Even though it is rented, her care reaches each corner of the house. The empty walls of the house were covered with ivy. A small space in the corner of a dining room turns into a tea room with a small pond. Electronic devices are covered with a white cloth hand-embroidered with colorful flowers.

And she relocated her Hanbok shop and showroom to a garage at the entrance of the house, which has become a popular spot for visitors.

"My friends and husband say I'm addicted to working, but for me it is a kind of time to reflect and conceive designs, concentrating solely on my inner self," Lee said as she kept sewing a piece of white linen, which would become a dishcloth with delicate embroidery.

Another important reason her ideas are spotlighted is they are eco-friendly. When serving food, she puts pine needles on the plate not to wash it. And she always reuses empty plastic bottles or boxes with a little design.

"I don't think I'm special. Mothers are professional. You know, people always say their mother's Kimchi is the best. People pay attention to me just because I'm a designer who does daily activities artistically and happily," she said.

Despite her humble remarks, the seats for her living class, which takes place at her house sponsored by a local home decorating magazine, have already been fully-booked until next spring. Recent lectures in November were focused on Korean-style ornament making, gift packaging and table setting for Christmas.

Along with Koreans who started sensing a new aspect of Korean style, many people from abroad such as wives of foreign ambassadors to Korea visit her house and workshop to experience Korean culture.

Among her several lectures, the most favored is Bojagi wrapping, a traditional way of packaging by using Bojagi, square-shaped clothes made of a variety of materials. She has some 60 patents for unique and different styles of wrapping and knotting.

Lately, she has taken part in an eco-friendly product exhibition, making a performance wrapping Volkswagen's New Beetle with Bojagi clothes.

"It was a symbolic performance breaking borders between two worlds and connecting them. Although it's physically painful, I will continue to do those kinds of experiments -- like wrapping a building -- to make people think differently," she said, still sewing, with her left hand bandaged.

"I'm trying to enjoy every moment of my life. If I'm not happy, I couldn't do things this fiercely," she said.

"I will keep doing what I'm doing now such as Hanbok design, doing lectures, writing books and homemaking. And I want to make my creations to be not only praised for high quality but also enjoyed widely by ordinary people," she said.

A Life Assimilated with Nature : Traditional Clothing Artist Lee Hyojae

2008-09-25 VIEW : 597

Traditional Clothing Artist Lee Hyojae Promotes Korean Beauty Through Eco-Friendly Fabrics

Written by Kang Kyung-ah
Photographs by Ryu Seunghoo

Right across from Gilsangsa Temple, a place with stone walls covered with verdant ivy attracts your attention. The Hyojae sign in the middle leads you to a pretty little art shop that displays a diverse array of unique cotton cloth items. The door next to the shop invites you to an exciting journey into the splendidly decorated Hyojae, displaying the unique beauty of Korean tradition in perfect harmony with nature. At Hyojae, run by Lee Hyojae, the owner's love for tradition and environment-friendly life unravels to amaze its visitors.

After ascending stone stairs, Lee can be seen exchanging warm greetings with a group of her departing guests. Many different kinds of wild plants including duckweed and fernbrakes are on the both sides of the staircase.

Lee is a hanbok designer who runs Hyojae, a hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) shop. Her childhood led her to choose her career as a hanbok designer. She said hanbok has been around her since birth because her mom had run a hanbok shop. Taking over her mom's business, she has made hanbok for more than 20 years; the hanbok on Korean historical TV dramas such as the "King's Woman" were her handiwork.

Exceptional Talents for Decorating

Called the Martha Stewart of Korea, Lee is also very famous for her excellent decorating skills. Her decorating talents are innate. "Since I was a child, I loved pretty things, such as collecting pretty pebbles in the streams, and I spent most of my time decorating things around me. I love stones and dishes. For me, they are much more valuable than diamonds," Lee said.

Hyojae is full of beautiful and creative decorative items with Korean features, including bamboo baskets, fans made of hanji (traditional Korean papers), traditional small dining tables, brass chamber pots, patchwork with beautiful embroidery on the walls, a stone mortar used as a tea table and many kinds of tea cups and pitchers. Thousands of various traditional and modern dishes in her kitchen make Lee's dish obsession obvious. Lee uses her creative decorating sense to cover unappealing parts of Hyojae, such as nail holes and electric outlets and switches.

Lee said people can find everything made of cloth at Hyojae. Along with other spaces at Hyojae, its art shop on the first floor displays a wide variety of her creations ─ dish clothes, cushions, wrapping clothes, gloves, aprons, clothing, table clothes, tea mats, spoon cases, money bags used on a wedding day, and toilet covers, all of which feature beautiful, delicate embroidery. The hanbok shop on the second floor features an assortment of wedding items, including hanbok with splendid colors, bedding, pillows and trickery and much more. The main material she uses for her decorations is cotton cloth because it's easy to boil, practical and hygienic.

Master in Bojagi Art

From among her diverse living decoration items, one truly remarkable item is bojagi (wrapping cloth). What captivates people upon entering the front door is a batch of colorful bojagi placed on wooden furniture. Various items including wine bottles, baskets, and sneakers are wrapped with bojagi of a variety of beautiful colors and different wrapping shapes.

Lee is fascinated by the charm of bojagi. "Bojagi has long been with us throughout our history. It has been used very practically in our daily lives, such as wrapping and covering things. With recyclable bojagi, we don't need wrapping paper, thus bojagi can save a tree and protect the environment," said the environment-friendly Lee.

Lee adds that bojagi also conveys warm feelings and sincerity between people who give and receive it. Using a wide variety of colors and wrapping shapes harmonized all together, she creates incredible artwork through which she delivers Korean culture and expresses various emotions and seasons. Based on her outstanding expertise in bojagi, Lee published a book on the art. She plans to hold exhibitions on bojagi both at home and abroad, and is enthusiastic about publicizing bojagi worldwide.

Enjoying Environment-Friendly Life

At Hyojae, people can relish the surrounding natural environment. Along with various plants near its entrance, her spacious, immaculate living room connects to a beautiful tranquil garden. At her garden matted with green lawns, Lee grows various wild plants and trees, including corn, ginger, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, hydrangea, and rose mosses. It's very surprising to find that she did all the landscaping on this spacious estate by herself. Dozens of jars and clean clothes hanging on the clotheslines evoke quaint and warm feelings. Sitting on chairs near the balcony overlooking the beautiful Gilsangsa Temple, you are able to enjoy conversation while feeling a cool wind. You can also immerse yourself into nature while walking through the garden with bare feet.

Because Lee likes inviting guests, Hyojae is always full of people, providing a great resting place for them. She enjoys sharing food with her guests and conversing with them. With her love for nature, she is well-known for her healthy cooking. She uses homegrown items in her cooking. Interestingly, there is a room filled with thousands of comic books to read. For Lee, a huge comic book fan, and her guests, this is one of most popular spots to hang out at Hyojae.

Continuous Effort to Foster Korean Tradition and Culture

At Hyojae, Lee offers more than the beautiful interior, charming decoration and masterful landscaping. Hyojae functions as a treasure house promoting Korean culture, where Lee gives lectures on the comprehensive aspects of Korean culture in clothing, eating, and housing. The classes cover various topics such as how to make dishcloth and lotus rice, how to eat Korean food and how to utilize bojagi. Lee emphasizes that, through her classes, people can learn not only about Korean culture but also about the Korean spirit. Her classes are very popular among both locals and foreigners. Many foreigners have visited Hyojae and it's becoming a very popular tourism spot. In particular, foreigners are mesmerized by her performance using bojagi.

With her superb interior design, housekeeping skills, and bojagi art, she has created quite a sensation. A popular TV program followed her and Hyojae's move from Samcheong-dong to Sungbuk-dong a couple months ago. Despite the busier schedule due to all the media attention, she is happier than ever. "My days go by quickly while working all day long. I regard labor as meditation and enjoy every moment of my life. I feel it's my responsibility to decorate Hyojae and further promote Korean culture and tradition through bojagi and books. So I'd like to commit myself to publicizing bojagi art and writing books on Korean culture and my life," Lee said. Along with her three published books, her life goal is to write a total 20 books.

Lee invites you to Hyojae, filled with people who love and appreciate the beauty of Korean tradition and nature. Hyojae is open from 9am to 7pm. It is accessible from Hansung Univ. Station. From there, it is within a 5-minute taxi ride. For more information, call (02) 720-5393.

Fujiwara Di and South Korea clothes Designer Lee Hyo-jae of Issei,Miyake sat opposite one day in November of which the leaf of a yellow maidenhair tree flew with Fujiwara Di of Issei, miyake like the flower of the snow at South Korea clothes Designer Lee Hyo-jae communication from mind to mind < VOGUE > December 2009 issue. Two people who had talked about clothes, the travel, nature in South Korea and Japan, and the colors were as intimate as a friend of long time. Issei, miyake are houses to which it walks on an original road that differs from the large-scale fashion house. Moreover, it is daily and a brand with the philosophy and artistry at the same time. It was shown that the skirt, outer, and the scarf, etc. were possible by one wrinkle, and showed how much various imagination to be able to be unfolded by 1000 of the South Korea clothes through the A-POC performance. The A-POC project was visited with Issei, miyake house in 1998, and it worked, and Fujiwara Di who had been acting as a creative director since the season of autumn of 2007 visited Seoul for the S/S presentation in 2010. Man who had undertaken whole [kyu-re-tei;ngu] reminded me of the idea that it only had to do this presentation work with South Korea clothes designer interest wrapper artist's Lee Hyo-jae. The wrapper of Japan was like to the South Korea wrapper and if the back and forth was joined, it seemed to be able to put out quite different feeling though there were just clothes that would tie the wrapper in the S/S collection next year and made it, too. Lee Hyo-jae and Fujiwara Di refrained from the exhibition opening for ten days last November on a late afternoon, it sat opposite, and it talked quietly.
It is glad ..Fujiwara Di (henceforth F)... It will propose it of receive impression to the book on you where the appearance to make various the one with one wrapper is included and do both this South Korea exhibitions.
Only here Lee Hyo-jae (henceforth H) is a fan of a long time of Issei, miyake (bread). It is one of these clothes that gives official approval a top pleat (saw) and I like still of wearing today. It fixed to the part of the shoulder of a gray turtle-neck and it produced like the boat problem. I will put on wrinkle with the iron tonight with the exhibition opening and put on clothes that bloom and put out quite different atmosphere.
It puts on my clothes ..F.. still straight. It willingly puts on President Brazilian married couple, king Swedish married couple, beam Issei, miyake. The people who willingly put on our clothes had the idea of him certain and digested wonderfully by one's own method.
Issei, miyakedisagrees as for H though it only has to put on other clothes as it is. It researches, and the interest is given. F is so. Shall I say that what space exists? It might be clothes where room can be put. Bags that were applied our wrapper and the wrapper of South Korea back and forth in such a meaning repeatedly today, concluded, and made were very wonderful. It was felt that it was a conception that had started by a soft idea that was not a stiff stereotype.
H I felt admiration because I saw clothes where the color vision of Japan was expressed as it was so that the remote place in the tradition house might go out walking in clothes next spring. The temperance beauty only of Issei, miyakewas felt by me.
The inspiration to the color is received in nature and daily life when the leaf of natural F is seen or the snow melts and a red flower blooms in spring. a lotIt went in Amazon with 300 color chips to prepare the collection next spring and everyone seems to have compared it one by one. It is thought that experiencing feeling that knowledge is retrieved on the Internet directly is quite different.
It is thought that a color all H runs mutually with the head teacher. And, there might have been a significant process up to coming of having become old in the world to me. A sky blue belt was presented to one degree. However, the place used naturally imagines and the idea doesn't imagine it. And, when the belt was expanded like [teiburubo], paved on the table, the fallen leaf was displayed, and the container was put, it suited very well. The mediation body is necessary when there is a color not suited. It is [desune] in fallen leaf [noyou] in this union.
Fhaha。
Do with F though it is terrible? It is not possible to usually slip out easily by the stereotype to the belt in Japan. Moreover, I think that it lives in the city in one and it loses the color. When all the colors were high-speed rotated, it became gray though it experimented once. Will not it put on a lot of (Receive it) achromatic colors when alive in the city such as modern people that rotates very early still? The nature of person who has room does only the person who can choose as soon as it hopes because the color worries.
H is so. Then, what is it thought of authorization?Authorization is a tranquil, steady color in me.
F I think that I differ for a moment. There are not a lot of colors to be able to win authorization. I think that authorization can push the person if considerable courage and a person (Receive it) not confident put it on. However, that oneself seemed to be also good at courage because it met Lee Hyo-jaeand it cooperated and it worked today and to have put on the authorization jacket and the pair of trousers.
Thank you for H [haha]. I am surprised at simplicity in Japan feeling admiration for hugeness in China while wearing South Korea clothes. It thought again, that each country of the Orient were really different though clothes of Issei, miyake were seen today.
Will F be so?It is really different though it is simple [naha] [sogu] of Japan and South Korea. The reason for South Korea clothes of South Korea is that it divides variously like chogori and the skirt, etc. though the kimono of Japan is one clothes only even in the tradition clothes.
It is thought that H is thought whether how of it if everyone sometimes expands the all parts of the world folk customs clothes and different respectively characteristics are compared will. It is because various elements such as the cultures and climates of the country are included in the tradition clothes. Other people are seen because I peep at my face and it is not possible to see (Fall in love) and it will contradict.
F [haha]. It is a suitable word. And, it will think a lot by traveling around various places. Please be so, and stop by a small village of following of Yamaguchi once if you can come to Japan. Tokyo, Osaka, and [kushuwa] will be able also to receive a different desire. When it is a region where a strong samurai was alive, not under rule in the shogunate age, and the color was able to be continued originally, the charm is very special.
There is a place to which it both goes without fail if a favorite friend can do H me. It is a branch temple of the age of [**] Atarashi located on all [**] roads ([chorurado]) small mountain paths in the boundary adjoining land region of [shigeake] ([muju]) and [chuukiyomichi] ([chunchondo])(Me small who receives the management of the headquarters). The appearance at the four seasons might be different everything, and be the place with each beauty.
I want to go both ..F.. without fail. You are great in the point of doing not only clothes but also various work of a wide concept. I can want surely to exchange an idea each other again once.
H I am also the same thing. At that time, you perform music do though the appearance to make clothes with the wrapper may be shown? If it is the same as you, a good presentiment that it spaces, it is musical, and can do cooperation happily the intersection of food and the art ([noha]) does.

Bae yong joon meets Lee Hyo-jae and "Queen of the living of South Korea"

Lee Hyo-jae who was called, "[Ta-sha] Tudor (* the following of the explanation) in South Korea" and "Queen of the living", and paid attention to by a method to live by naturalism and [pojagi] (patchwork of South Korea) worldwide art met [inoraifu].
*[Ta-sha] Tudor: Writer of stories for children loved most in the United States. It was a writer who won the Caldecott prize and the picture book that exceeded 100 every 70 years or more was sent to the world as a painter who had drawn the illustration of "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess Serra". However, she is more famous for a peculiar lifestyle. [Ta-sha] to build the house in the country in Vermont state, to make a beautiful garden on the site that becomes as much as 300,000 tsubos, and to live dusts, weaves the cloth with [ori] machine, makes clothes, and provides the yogurt and the cheese for oneself with hircine milk making it. The life is a woman who lives happily in the world of very short most in a relaxed manner to spend it melancholily.
The author who had met her for the first time received the impression of looking like the soul of a free gypsy. The taking a picture schedule is busy, and the camera, and take out and room to (?) us who started the taking a picture preparation while rushing it
Woman by recommendation of tea showing it. The mind in a hurry at once can be solved like the snow, and the whole content of Lee Hyo-jae catches one's eye. Taking a picture with the garden was just a difficult tree and a grass in the garden assumed to be spacious on the day when it was raining awfully though spottily said it was … And, the nature that today that rained was appropriate to the scene to which the raindrop struck them was done.
「Like this..live..laugh..)..money..provide.If there was money, even the shop put out and : to three wing outline good [ku] [kiyohora] … It played here and there, it turned, and it lived. 」Lee Hyo-jae jokes ..solving and untying the mind.. as saying. 「How a day passes when living here finishes being not understood. Is it very busy?..(.. ..laughter..)。There is no time to devote one's time to life and to read TV, the radio, and the newspaper, etc. And, there is no curtain because it hates [hokori] to accumulate. ..(.. ..laughter..) not multiplied」

Part with one monger room when it moves and her house is looked about … The lifestyle is felt not usual at once by me. When the space of her refreshing is seen here and there gracefully, ..encounter.. ? though it is clean and simple. I want to live like this. It has been understood that it is a suitable house ..the desire...
It is natural that there is no one like TV because of the woman who speaks, "Living conditions : beautifully and easily without spending money … Voluntarily grow food and simple as possible to be cooked and wonderfully … . It is necessary to move the body more hard ..it is such..". It might be clear that [hokori] has accumulated in the corner even in case of being. Though it is thought that it on the character of Lee Hyo-jae cannot be seen ….
It is a fashion designer who represents South Korea, and Lee Hyo-jae with the considerable experience and the knowledge to the South Korea style such as South Korea clothes and Korean food.
Lee Hyo-jae maintains a high popular acknowledgment level through a vigorous broadcasting, the lecture, and writing. And, the impulse that wants to meet Lee Hyo-jae occurs to everyone without fail by one degree as for the person who read her book. And, Lee Hyo-jae opened the course that the life life is opened to the public with food and [pojagi]. "Gate market" can be done even if it doesn't explain of course by people who always apply.
It doesn't stay in the South Korea clothes design recently, most Korean, worldwide [pojagia-to] is announced, and it is paid attention. A cultural performance in which worldwide great car Volkswagens by the environmental goods group sponsoring is wrapped with [pojagi] is done, the performance etc. in which cosmetics are wrapped with [pojagi] in the new commodity ranching show in 2009 of worldwide cosmetics CLINIQUE are announced, and it is remarkable.
Moreover, it is scheduled that it is appointed to the ambassador of announcing to public of earthen Ulsan world cultural Exposition this year, and beauty and the excellence of the earthenware of South Korea are known widely in the world. Lee Hyo-jae 「I am glad to participate in the event with a deep meaning that makes a tradition earthen culture of South Korea that disappears and goes a theme. I want to do one's best and to inform a lot of people of earthen Exposition. 」It clarified it.
It is a South Korea clothes designer who manages South Korea clothes shop "Lee Hyo-jae " in front of castle north [horashoutera], and it is [pojagia-tei;suto], and Lee Hyo-jae to wrap all the one with [pojagi] like the art.
The teacher of the needle ploy shop, the South Korea clothes shop, and [pojagi] … For the unpleasantness of me, in her that it doesn't do to others, and it wants to make me others like it, what is the most important one?「Every day might be a present every day. And, the person. The person is the most honorable and important for me. I wonder might be more important than it improves it to the person. Let's improve it to the person. It is my life philosophy. 」The woman who talks like that indicates the garden. Incidently, as much as one dog that should exist in the garden assumed to be spacious like this is not seen. 「If the dog has time to pour love ....person.. cry of a better spit... ..(.. ..laughter..)。And, I do not keep other one. 」She laughs because she says. It is a woman by listening to person's story especially like that probably because of. The maxim "If trying to associate deeply with the person … It is necessary to listen to other party's story without talking and hear it" floats from the woman who makes eyes sparkle like the dew collected in the flowering plant and hears the story at the people. The appearance of Lee Hyo-jae that practices the story comes for a few lies to want not to exist, either to look transparent cleanly, and to do a lot of stories.
Lee Hyo-jae . Do you meet bae yong joon?
It was an unexpected story. Does even the affiliated company : when having met him who exists without visiting in home?It is said that it worked with her by the project of the book that introduces the beauty of South Korea that bae yong joon prepares. Should I say that Yon also saw through the talent that Lee Hyo-jae is still superior at one view?
「It was a young person to whom eyes sparkled. It overflowed intelligently in the talent, and I felt a strong person affirmative at one view power. 」The reaction of (?) reporters that set up the commotion is seen when it is terrible, and Lee Hyo-jae :. 「..encounter.. ?Was such a terrible person young person named bae yong joon?If it had known the reputation in the world, it were not likely to have been able to have spoken so comfortably … Having met without knowing were fortunately. 」Woman by laugh. solvingIt whispered quietly to a person when going to Japan with bae yong joon at the end of September.
It beautifully decorates, and the woman by paving the carpet. every corner and container one of the houseSomething is always created by the hand in the mind, it wraps with [pojagi], and straightening of the garden of the house … It is a menu of organic agriculture that is not the instant and decoration of the table … If it is a woman in the Republic of Korea, everyone is dreamt lifestyle once. It is exactly Lee Hyo-jae to spend the life that no one can practice though always dreamt in the mind.
「It is necessary to express the mind by the hand. It is easy to become the person only of the word that wants never to meet only in the word that should frequently use the mind. And, the hand work is to express the mind. 」-Her book: Passage with "Let's live like Lee Hyo-jae " .「韩国的生活的女王」Lee Hyo-jae,,遇到bae yong joon!

Lee Hyo-jae,!

Teacher Lee did not know Michael Jackson (MJ).
One day, while having a meal in the store, she saw the report on MJ’s passing. From then on, she said she started liking MJ.

Later she saw YJ, YJ revealed his sadness while mentioning the passing of MJ.
Followed by
YJ : MJ and Teacher Lee are the same age. Born on the same day (not sure if he is referring to his birthday or the teacher’s) (note: MJ ‘s birthday : August 29 1958)
LHJ: What’s wrong?
YJ: Nothing, just a tongue in cheek comment.

Later, teacher Lee realized perhaps what YJ meant was that whenever MJ comes to mind, so should YJ as well.

One day they were making Kimchi
Teacher Lee wrote on the blackboard the word Kimchi

At that moment, YJ wrote at the side :
Master Lee Hyo Jae, Disciple Bae Yong Joon.
From then on teacher Lee started addressing BYJ as “disciple”.

Looking at YJ’s philosophy through the book of Beauty of Korea

I have finally finished reading the Beauty of Korea which I bought last September. BYJ’s thinking is quite philosophical. One can see that he also wishes to do many things. There are a few interesting areas I was quite drawn to.

Here “I” refers to BYJ

Making Ceramics

The ceramics teacher said among 800 items, generally there are only 50 items that can be classified as satisfactory.

The teacher asked me to select one out of the 48 glazed fired crane ceramics from the kiln, as a gift for myself. At the same time testing my eyesight.

I carefully checked one after another. I narrowed it down to 6 items. Eventually I had chosen 2 items, then I picked my favorite one. I pla-ced the ceramic in front of the teacher with two shivering hands.

The teacher said “ This ceramic is really second to none”. After hearing this, I heaved a huge sigh of relief.

Kyong Ju
After seeing the ancient capital Kyongju, while I was lost in my thoughts, a colleague who likes to snack wanted to try the traditional Kyongju steam bun. He was pestering me saying that “there is no other branch elsewhere in the country, this is the only pla-ce that sells them”. So we then went into the shop and watched the entire process.

The newly made Kyongju steam bun is just delicious. The filling inside made us very happy while eating it. A group of people were saying how this is the first time for them to taste these steamed buns, but at the same time they were wrapping the sample buns (from the counter)which were for the visitors to try out with serviettes into their pocket. Originally I was going to stop their indiscretions, but after seeing their smiling faces, I dispelled the thought. Afterwards I bought a box of steamed buns in order to express my apologies to the owner.

2 women wrapped up in a colorful tradition

‘I understand . . . I also preferred Hermes to hanbok when I was young. But [bojagi] are versatile, simple and very Korean.’

Lee Hyo-jae, below far left, turns humble Korean cloth known as bojagi into tote bags with a few simple touches and knots. [JoongAng Photo]
Until recently, bojagi, or Korean wrapping cloth, was considered beautiful but irreparably old-fashioned in an era of shopping malls, leather backpacks and plastic bags. But before Koreans could begin to afford these luxuries in the 1960s, bojagi cloths were used for nearly everything: to carry books, groceries and food, and as head scarves, wallets or even wall decorations. Bojagi were also often wrapped - particularly by older people - around gifts, like bottles of freshly pressed sesame oil or even animals for grandchildren living far afield. Holding a live chicken wrapped in a bojagi, a grandma might beam with delight, imagining the nutritious meal the fluttering fowl would provide her descendants.

In the face of rapid industrialization in the ’70s, however, bojagi were overshadowed by new, more specialized containers and bags. It’s no wonder bojagi have grown rare, now used only on special occasions like New Year’s Day, when department stores promote gift sets wrapped in them.

Could that all be about to change? Lee Hyo-jae and Patricia Lee are out to bring back the rainbow-colored wraps, reinventing them as the ideal “eco-friendly bag” in Korea and the United States.

Lee Hyo-jae’s bojagi wrap keeps original colors and patterns but adds twists like a braid. [JoongAng Photo]
Lee Hyo-jae is a designer of traditional Korean clothing, and her profession drew her initially to bojagi. “It was very natural for me to use bojagi in my everyday life because I make hanbok. Whenever I finish making a hanbok, I wrap the traditional garment and other wedding gifts with bojagi for my clients, because it’s traditional,” said Lee, 52, at her two-story office in Seongbuk-dong, northern Seoul.

Although Lee rose to fame for her hanbok first, later earning the nickname “the Korean Martha Stewart” for her eco-friendly lifestyle and cooking, gardening and other homemaking skills, it was bojagi that covered her office’s tables and walls, from the entrance to the kitchen and the tea room.

Behind Hyo-jae, who sat next to a white kitchen island table, Fissler pots, wrapped in bojagi, sat neatly arranged on a metal rack, while tissue boxes wrapped in various candy-colored bojagi lay scattered about.

“I’ve been wrapping things all my life,” Lee said, “be it a watermelon, a dustpan or a pair of sneakers. And I found myself enjoying moments when people marvel at my bojagi wrap before opening their presents.

“I think I’m kind of addicted to that moment, and it helped me get the knack of wrapping bojagi with all different shapes, knots and bows.”

Lee has been in the hanbok business for 25 years. Her decades of bojagi wrapping brought her chronic wrist problems that forced her to wear casts for months. But that hasn’t stopped her from dreaming up even bigger things.

“While wrapping gifts with bojagi one after another at the request of acquaintances, I realized people were starting to talk about environmental issues, and an ‘aha!’ moment hit me.

“I thought I could do something fun with these [bojagi] because almost every housewife has at least one bojagi in their kitchen drawers,” Lee continued.

There began yet another career: bojagi artist. Lee published a book in January 2008 based on her years of experience. It shares her witty and creative ideas on how to wrap bojagi, featuring festive knots and bows that look like dumplings, blooming flowers or topknots. Wrapping a bottle of wine, Lee braided the bojagi to make the wine bottle look like a cheery girl with long hair. Using red and green bojagi, Lee wrapped small tissue boxes and stacked them. Ta-da! A bojagi Christmas tree.

With a few touches, a piece of cloth becomes a tote bag, a backpack, a cushion cover, a pouch for sanitary pads. Lee also uses bojagi for picnics or a blanket to warm herself up.

Just like her previous homemaking books, which became instant hits, the bojagi book is selling well. According to the publisher, it has gone through eight printings so far.

“Since people hardly read these days, we call it a success if a certain book is printed more than two or three times,” said Son Kyung-hee, an official at the marketing team of JoongAng Magazine & Books.

To make it easier for Americans to embrace this somewhat foreign cloth, Patricia Lee, above right, added some funky factors such as beads and fresh-looking prints to her bojagi wrap. Provided by Miriam Ri
As Lee makes a name for herself as a bojagi artist, her office grows even more packed with people eager to learn how to become bojagi wizards. Groups of foreign tourists - most Japanese - visit the master for advice. She has at least a dozen other professional interests, but Lee’s busy most days with bojagi.

One reason for that: she’s opening an academy in Japan to teach locals bojagi wrapping in the first half of this year. She also plans to take her show on the road, wrapping a Volkswagen Beetle with a huge bojagi in Hainan, China, early next month at the Boao Forum for Asia. The enormous piece of cloth was made from more than a hundred bojagi, the artist said.

“I understand young people won’t be interested in these things. I also preferred Hermes to hanbok when I was young,” Lee said. “But it’s versatile, simple and very Korean. It also saves you from using unnecessary wrapping materials. Most of all, it doesn’t take a lot of money, but it still looks pretty and cool.”

Meanwhile, across the Pacific, another woman has been enticed by these simple cloth wrappings: Patricia Lee, 39, also known as “the bojagi lady.”

Before last Christmas, the peak season for Americans splurging on wrapping paper, elaborate boxes, ribbons and cards, Patricia Lee was invited onto six different TV shows, including Good Morning America, where she demonstrated how to wrap gifts with bojagi after Amazon.com sold out of her bojagi book “The Wrapping Scarf Revolution” in just two weeks after its release.

The younger Lee calls it a “worthy challenge” to convince Americans to accept this new and foreign thing as earth-friendly.

One way she marketed bojagi to Americans was by adding bling: beads, spangles and bold colors and patterns. She also started calling them “bobo” instead of bojagi for easier pronunciation. And her tactics worked. In the U.S. alone, 60 stores sell Patricia’s diverse Bobo products, and her bojagi creations are available at shops in Canada and Japan.

After emigrating to the U.S. at age 5 and being raised in a big family that saw four generations living under the same roof, Lee said she grew up watching her grandmother and great grandmother wrap things in bojagi. But she had no interest in them back then.

“I thought it was unattractive and old-fashioned,” said Lee, now a mother of two sons living in Connecticut.

But Lee’s visit to Seoul when she was a college student in the 1990s changed the way she thought of bojagi.

Watching her aunt wrap a gift, Lee said, “I was amazed at how simple and beautifully efficient the wrapping was. In America, we hunt for wrapping paper, tape, ribbon and scissors, and then spend a lot of time cutting, folding, taping and then putting everything away again.

“I thought this was a wonderful way to wrap gifts and wondered why more people didn’t do this.”

The timing was perfect. Just as Americans began to discover reusable bags and bottles, Lee launched her Bobo Wrapping Scarf in 2008, and started to make attractive bojagi to appeal to Americans.

Her philosophy is simple: “I design things that I want to buy and use,” she said.

Looking at Patricia’s creations, it is hard to believe that they are still bojagi. Where Lee Hyo-jae’s bojagi still use traditional colors and patterns, Patricia Lee mixes and matches modern styles in innovative ways. One bojagi has black zebra patterns on one side and is solid dark pink on the other. Other patterns include polka dots, cheetah fur, flowers, cherries and bandana prints. Some of her bojagi are even crinkled.

As a fervent advocate of bojagi, Patricia carries at least one wherever she goes: at a potluck party to carry a bottle of wine or on a trip, to wrap up her clothes and lingerie.

To these two women, bojagi are no longer just for fashion-ignorant grannies but for everyone - especially those who care about the environment. But the modernization is a tough sell in some quarters.

“Bojagi were widely used back in the Joseon Dynasty, but nobody wrapped bojagi as some people do these days using elastic bands and wires,” said Kim Hyun-hee, a master craftswoman who has made traditional bojagi for the past 40 years.

Lee Hyo-jae and Patricia Lee both use elastic and bungee cords sometimes to hold bows or knots.

Answering her critics, Patricia Lee said, “I think Korean culture is the best kept secret in the world! The problem is that many wonderful aspects of Korean culture lack a certain degree of relevance.

“The ancient art of bojagi making and designing is wonderful, but how does it relate to you and me? My challenge is to make Korean culture interesting, fresh and relevant,” she said.

“This is my challenge: to make bojagi attractive and familiar to Americans and also to make bojagi feel fresh and new to Koreans.”

Female Anchor: A while ago, you two were introduced in the book that Bae Yong Joon ssi published.

Lee Hyo Jae: Yes.

Female Anchor: The Japanese fans must have liked you a lot as usual.

Cheon Han Bong: Yes. I was surprised. He was very good with his hands.

Male anchor: Are you talking about Bae Yong Joon ssi?

Cheon Han Bong: Average people can’t make something right away even though they know how to handle the clay. The clay doesn’t go up straight due to the speed of the spinning wheel. But Bae Yong Joon ssi followed my instruction very well. We need to narrow the arms to lift the clay with the speed of the spinning wheel. We need to narrow the arms to keep the balance, and surprisingly, he did it very well. After a while, he made one right way. I saw him making about two. I think he is very good with his hands. He was born with it and given by nature. SOURCE* POST & REPORT BY SUEHAN SSI/BLOG

[Trans]BYJ’s message about the Teacher Hyojae’s Kimchee Festival Tour

Hello, I’m Bae Yong Joon.

I’m glad to hear that the teacher Hyojae will organize “the Hyojae’s Kimchee Festival”. I developed a precious relationship with the teacher Hyojae while I wrote a book last year. I could feel the beauty of the Korean culture, the tastes coming from her hands, and her truthful thoughts while I was learning how to make Kimchee at her house.

Kimchee has a superb taste and efficacy, and there is nothing that can be wasted. The Kimchee is our culture’s boast of pride. Most of all, I had delighted moments while I was making kimchee with my friends, and it still remains in my memory with the warm-hearted feelings. I hope you too have nice and warm moments at the Kimchee festival while you make kimchee with the teacher Hyojae.
